Elon Musk: A Dreamer, Industrial Visionary and Brand Champion

When we think about some of the most successful individuals in our modern era or as I like to call them, Brand Champions, many of us think of Steve Jobs and how he transformed Apple into one of the world’s best companies and overall recognizable brands. In a way, he set the mark for Brand Champions to strive for. Now, Elon Musk and his plethora of companies are experiencing success while he is evolving into the next great Brand Champion of our generation. Because of Elon Musk’s inspiring drive, it reminds us of the way Jobs thought and changed the way we think about computers, music and mp3 players (iPod), cell phones and tablets.

Over the last several years, we have seen Musk develop into a prime example of a true leader in the marketplace, leading the charge within his own companies and changing the way we think about the automobile and space industries.  At 41 years old, Musk boasts an incredibly impressive resume: In 1995, he started by founding Zip2, a web software company, with his brother. He then went on to co-found X.com, which we know today as Paypal, in 1999. He started his third company, SpaceX, in 2002 but he is probably most famous for co-founding the luxury electric car company, Tesla Motors. Musk also serves on the board of SolarCity.

A self-proclaimed engineer, Musk has gone from sleeping on the floor of his company’s office to turning his aspirations into riches. He took the fortune he made from Zip2 and PayPal and invested it all on Tesla and SpaceX. With these ventures, he had his fair share of struggles, as we all experience throughout our careers, even to the point of having near death moments. Musk lead both Tesla and SpaceX through those tough times; they survived to live another day, and he too, to see them to become highly successful companies.

Musk’s passion for engineering, design and excellence are characteristics that help to define him as a Brand Champion, as well as his never ending drive to succeed. Brand Champions don’t just dream, but they work tirelessly in order to make these dreams become a reality. They take action, and if things don’t go according to plan, they make revisions and modifications to reengineer and try again until they reach their goal.

Brand Champions aren’t just dreamers or visionaries, no, Brand Champions push themselves and their companies to get stuff done and execute. Brand Champions are intentional and push those dreams into action and accomplishment.
